What the Proposed Postage Rate Changes Mean for Postage Meter Users

New postage rates will become effective January 22, 2017.  This increase represents a 2 cent increase to First-Class Mail (1 oz); returning the price back to where it was before the removal of the exigent surcharge.

There will be no change to Postcards, International Letter or First-Class Letters additional ounces.

Postage Rate Changes

Proposed Rate Change for 2017

If your business uses a postage meter, you’ll see a .5 cent savings compared to what you pay today, and a 6% benefit (3 cent savings) compared to the regular price of stamps.

Using a postage meter is kind of like having a mini post office at your desk. The biggest benefit is that you pay discounted postage rates instead of paying retail prices for postage. But there are other ways in which using a postage meter benefits both you and the post office.

For instance, increased automation starting from the meter customer means less manual labor is needed to process the mail at the post office.

Since stamps give no indication where the mail comes from, postage meter indicia helps determine where the mail started, and how much processing is required per zip code. This information allows the post office to allocate the correct amount of mail carriers to the pick up and delivery route — making everyone more efficient!
